GM ANNOUNCES SAFETY RECALLS

 GM ANNOUNCES SAFETY RECALLS
DETROIT, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) said

today it is conducting two safety recalls to replace secondary (back up) hood latches and to repair console-mounted transmission shift assemblies on certain 1991 and 1992 model passenger cars.
Owners have been notified and dealers will repair or replace all necessary parts at no charge.
The first recall involves about 250,000 1991 and 1992 Chevrolet Caprice sedans and station wagons, 1992 Buick Roadmaster sedans and station wagons and 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagons. These vehicles may have secondary hood latches which have become inoperative because of possible corrosion buildup. If the primary latches on these vehicles are not completely latched, the hood could open unexpectedly and block drivers' vision. Dealers will install a redesigned secondary hood latch and latch guide.
The second recall involves approximately 8,500 1991 and 1992 Oldsmobile 98 Touring Sedans and Pontiac Bonneville models equipped with console-mounted transmission shifts. The shift control cable may disengage causing the actual gear position to differ from the indicator reference displayed on the console. If this happens, the automatic transmission would remain in the gear position last selected. Dealers will install clips to hold the cable properly in place. Vehicles with transmission shift selectors on the steering column are not affected.
Customers who have questions may contact Pontiac Customer Assistance at 1-800-762-2737, Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Buick at 1-800-521-7300, and Oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537. All numbers are toll free.
