GM ANNOUNCES PURCHASING APPOINTMENTS

 WARREN, Mich., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The appointments of three executives to posts in the General Motors (NYSE: GM) Worldwide Purchasing Group were announced today by G. Richard Wagoner, GM executive vice president and chief financial officer.
 James E. Taylor is named executive director of Worldwide Purchasing -- Machinery and Equipment/Sales and Marketing. Previously he was executive director -- Advance Purchasing and Global Sourcing.
 Gunter Schmirler is named executive director of Worldwide Purchasing -- Advance Purchasing and Global Sourcing, succeeding Mr. Taylor. Previously he was director of Advance Purchasing.
 Volker J. Barth is named executive director of Worldwide Purchasing -- Metallic. Previously, he was director of Materials Management for GM do Brasil.
 Mr. Taylor, 36, is a native of Peterborough, Ontario. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and business management in 1980 from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He joined GM of Canada in Oshawa, Ontario, in September 1980 as a salaried employe in training. He held subsequent positions at GM of Canada as an industrial engineer, production supervisor, and senior buyer. In October 1985, he was promoted to materials manager of interiors for GM's Saturn subsidiary in Troy, Mich. Mr. Taylor was appointed manager of Advance Purchasing for GM Europe in June 1989, and was based in Russelsheim, Germany. In May 1991, he was promoted to purchasing executive for Advance Purchasing/Global Sourcing for GM Europe, the position he held before returning to North America in 1992.
 Mr. Schmirler, 51, a native of Germany, holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Frankfurt Engineering College. He also completed GM's two-year overseas scholarship program at GMI in Flint, Mich., in August 1971. Mr. Schmirler joined GM's Adam Opel A.G. subsidiary in Germany in October 1965 as design engineer, and held subsequent engineering positions of increasing responsibility in Opel's Technical Development Center in Russelsheim.
 He joined Opel's purchasing department in April 1988 as a sourcing agent for Advance Purchasing. In October 1991, he became manager of Advance Purchasing and Platform Management for GM Europe. In February 1992, he was appointed Purchasing Executive -- Supplier Development, Planning and Communication for GM Europe. He was named director of Advance Purchasing for Worldwide Purchasing, based in Warren, Mich., in July 1992.
 Mr. Barth, 46, a native of Darmstadt, Germany, joined GM's Adam Opel subsidiary in April 1963 as an apprentice electrician. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Engineering College of Russelsheim in 1969, and a master's degree in engineering from the University of Darmstadt in 1974. Upon completion of his studies, he was appointed experimental engineer at Opel in June 1974. In January 1981, he was appointed group engineer -- vehicle evaluation/field. He was named manager of the Opel Liaison Office for GM Overseas Corp., based in Tokyo, in January 1984. He returned to Opel in Germany as manager of operational planning in 1986, and in 1987 was named purchasing manager. He was promoted to purchasing executive in charge of metallic parts for Opel in 1989, and in May 1990 became purchasing executive in charge of Advance Purchasing and Global Sourcing for Opel. In April 1991, he was appointed manager of purchasing for GM do Brasil in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in December 1992 he was promoted to director of Materials Management for GM do Brasil.
