GM'S HERBERGER NAMED TO NEW POSITION

FLINT, Mich., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The appointment of Douglas J. Herberger to a newly created position as general director of consumer related aftermarket at General Motors Service Parts Operations (SPO) has been announced by SPO General Manager William J. Lovejoy.
Herberger, whose appointment took effect Oct. 1, has been finance director for SPO. A successor to him is to be announced later.
In his new position, Herberger will lead implementation of a new partnership between GM's Automotive Components Group Worldwide (ACGW) and SPO in an effort to increase market share, efficiency and effectiveness in the domestic automotive aftermarket. He will continue to report to Lovejoy, but will work closely with the ACGW divisions whose products SPO sells to mass merchandisers and warehouse distributors.
"In addition to SPO's business of selling and distributing parts and accessories to GM dealerships, we believe there are substantial growth opportunities for such sales in the independent aftermarket," explained Lovejoy. "Doug's experience and abilities have prepared him well for this assignment," he added, "as it requires extensive knowledge of automotive components; finance; planning, and sales, service and marketing."
Herberger began his GM career in 1973 with Harrison Division in Lockport, N.Y., as a college-graduate-in-training. In 1976, he joined the GM Financial Staff in Detroit. There he held a variety of analyst and senior analyst positions.
From 1980-83, Herberger held several supervisory positions on the former Fisher Body Division's Financial and Business Planning Staffs in Warren, Mich. In 1983, he returned to the GM Financial Staff as director of cost analysis, and the following year he was named director of the Treasurer's Office Administration Staff.
In 1985, Herberger was appointed assistant divisional comptroller for the former Fisher Guide Division and the next year became director of business operations. In 1987, he was named executive assistant to the group executive-in-charge of component operations for ACGW.
Herberger was appointed general director of costing and measurement systems on the GM Comptroller's Staff in 1988 and was named divisional comptroller of the Central Foundry Division, now part of GM Powertrain, in Saginaw, Mich., in 1990. The following year he was appointed divisional comptroller for casting operations at Powertrain Division. He joined SPO as director of finance in March of 1992.
Herberger is a native of Lockport and holds a bachelor of science degree in finance from St. Bonaventure University (Olean, N.Y.) and a master's degree in business administration from Michigan State University.
