GM'S GOODWRENCH LANSING EXPRESS PROVIDES 48-HOUR SERVICE

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors' (NYSE: GM) new Goodwrench Lansing Express program measures its parts order processing time in hours instead of days.
According to Larry Burris, when GM dealerships order parts stocked at Lansing, they can expect delivery within 48 hours of the order date. Burris is manager of the GM Service Parts Operations (SPO) Lansing National Parts Distribution Center -- home of The Goodwrench Lansing Express.
"The Goodwrench Lansing Express is part of SPO's ongoing efforts to continually improve customer satisfaction," explained Burris. "We've changed our shipping emphasis at Lansing from days to afternoons to better serve our customers. An order placed by 1 p.m. will be shipped that day and delivered to the GM dealership within 48 hours."
The 230,000 parts stocked at Lansing are generally not stocked at dealerships, and most orders shipped from there are needed to repair a customer's vehicle. "That is why parts other than those ordered for dealership inventory will be shipped to arrive within 48 hours after the order is placed. We don't want a customer to wait for repairs as a result of parts availability -- even for seldom-used parts. Specialized handling, storage equipment and new order writing systems were designed for this type of business at Lansing," added Burris.
Handling slow-moving parts at Lansing is part of SPO's centers of expertise strategy, which is to perform specialized functions in the one location best suited to handle the work. Lansing is one of six SPO facilities involved in this strategy. Examples of work performed at these centers include sheet-metal preparation in Flint, Mich., and packaging and shipment of fast-moving, competitive parts in Pontiac, Mich.
Lansing's 48-hour service is SPO's latest step in improving order response time and customer satisfaction. In April, a new computer system resulted in a 24-hour reduction in order response time. During July, Lansing began offering Saturday service to GM dealerships. Burris noted that, "these service enhancements are designed to move us toward our goal of best in class."
SPO, headquartered in Flint, with sales offices based in Detroit, markets automotive service and replacement parts and accessories worldwide through its GM Parts, AC-Delco and International sales activities.
