GLOCK OK'D FOR LAPD USE.

Byline: Mariel Garza Staff Writer

The Los Angeles Police Commission on Tuesday approved the use of Glock firearms for LAPD officers - weapons Chief William Bratton said are lighter-weight and are easier to use.

``Seventy percent of the police departments in America - this is what they use,'' Bratton said.

Los Angeles Police Department officers will still receive a standard issue 9mm Beretta when they leave the academy, but will be able to buy Glocks - or the already approved Smith & Wesson 9mm or .45-caliber side arms - with their owm money.

Bratton expects 750 to 1,000 officers to switch to the Glocks immediately.

The .40-caliber Glocks are popular with police officers because they have the stopping power of the larger .45-caliber weapons, but are smaller, easier to use and rarely discharge accidentally.

``I've actually shot both, and the Glock is much more comfortable in my hands,'' said Police Commissioner Sylvia Saucedo.
