GLOBAL CUSTOMERS SELECT SPRINT GVPN SERVICE

GLOBAL CUSTOMERS SELECT SPRINT GVPN SERVICE
WASHINGTON, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today

announced that Grand Metropolitan PLC and Digital Equipment Corporation have signed with Sprint for its Global Virtual Private Network (GVPN) service.
GVPN allows multinational organizations to share private network features multilaterally among participating countries. GVPN provides customers needing multinational communications with many sophisticated features, including seven-digit on-net calling with fast set-up, switched 56/64 Kbps data, international call forwarding, network ring-again, calling line identification and name display.
Introduced in 1990 in the United States by Sprint, in the United Kingdom by Mercury Communications Ltd., and in Hong Kong by Hong Kong Telecom International, the GVPN partnership is expanding to include Unitel and Teleglobe of Canada, PTT Netherlands and AOTC, Australia's telecommunications administration. GVPN also will interconnect to Japan through International Digital Communications, Inc., a Japanese Type 1 communications carrier.
"GVPN gives U.S. businesses the very same telecommunications features and services abroad that they have at home," said David Dorman, president of Sprint's Major Accounts Group. "As their international operations expand around the world, so, too, can Sprint's VPN service serve their global needs."
Grand Metropolitan (GrandMet), the international foods, drinks and retailing group with headquarters in London, is using Sprint's GVPN for voice service between offices in New York, Minneapolis, Miami, Hartford, Allentown, Dallas, and Teaneck, N.J., and GrandMet's private network in the United Kingdom. GVPN provides GrandMet users with shortened dialing plans and enhances its existing Sprint VPN services.
"GVPN has given us trans-Atlantic private network-like facilities with minimal fixed costs. We are pleased with its quality and operation," said Dick Cawdell, group telecommunications director, Grand Metropolitan.
Digital Equipment Corporation, with headquarters in Maynard, Mass., is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software and services. Digital chose GVPN for voice service between Hong Kong and the United States. Traffic originating in Hong Kong terminates at multiple locations in the United States.
"The interest on the part of major multinational corporations in this service is evidence of the need for a truly multilateral VPN service between the world's major business centers," said Andrew Burroughs, vice president for global marketing at Sprint International, Sprint's international telecommunications and private networks subsidiary. "GVPN, as the first service of this kind, is expanding rapidly. We're pleased to have GrandMet and Digital join Exxon's U.K. subsidiary, Esso, and the other companies that are realizing the benefits of GVPN."
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide, all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
