GLENDALE GETS DISNEY BALL ROLLING.

Byline: Dave McNary Staff Writer

The city of Glendale took the first official step Thursday toward creating a major new entertainment industry campus for Walt Disney Co.

The city's redevelopment agency issued a ``notice of preparation'' to state officials that it had launched the environmental review process for Disney's proposed Grand Central Creative Campus. Redevelopment director Jeanne Armstrong said the draft environmental impact report, prepared by Los Angeles-based environmental consultants PCR, should be ready in March following extensive information gathering and public meetings.

The project would transform the dozens of tilt-up concrete buildings in Grand Central industrial park into a high-tech hub with four- to six-story buildings surrounded by green belts, courtyards, walkways, tree-lined streets and planted medians. The first new buildings would be ready for occupancy in 2004.

Armstrong said local reaction to the project, unveiled by Disney in early September, has been positive. ``I think Disney has been in Glendale for so long that they are perceived as a very good employer and a company that gives back to the community,'' she said.

Walt Disney Imagineering, the research and development operation that designs theme-park rides, has been headquartered in the industrial park since 1961. Disney bought the property, which lies within the city's 7-year-old San Fernando Road Redevelopment Corridor, in 1997 and has about 3,000 employees there.

Disney's plans include restoring the now-vacant Grand Central Air Terminal, the first major airport in the Los Angeles area, and converting it into office space. When completed, the entire project will be anchored by Disney's Imagineering and new media divisions.
