GLASPIE BACKGROUND INFORMATION AVAILABLE FROM MEAD DATA CENTRAL
DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Individuals interested in reviewing news reports concerning U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie's involvement with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein just prior to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, can receive a free research report from Mead Data Central, the providers of the NEXIS(R) electronic information service.
During the Oct. 19 nationally televised presidential debate, Ross Perot charged that the U.S., through Glaspie, had misled the Iraqi leader into thinking that the Bush administration would not interfere in any action against Kuwait and that documents relating to this have been withheld from Congress.
When refuted by Bush, Perot advised going to NEXIS to review news stories surrounding the issue. After recording extremely high levels of research activity the day following the debate, Mead Data Central officials concluded that many Americans were interested in the issue and might like to see the stories themselves.
"We certainly don't see it as a coincidence that our use spiked immediately after Mr. Perot's comments," said Deborah Silcox, business information services marketing director.
According to Silcox, trained NEXIS researchers have pulled the full- text stories relating to Glaspie's role and her subsequent hearings before Congress and have packaged a number of them together to provide a thorough overview of the event as covered by the news media. Individuals interested in receiving a free copy of the report can call 800-227-9597, ext. 7009, and one will be mailed to them.
The NEXIS service is one of the world's largest electronic information research services which offers the ability to search material from more than 750 full-text business and news sources and almost 4,000 databases. NEXIS customers can access this information directly over their telephone lines and onto their computer screens.
Mead Data Central is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Mead Corporation (NYSE: MEA), a leader in forest products and electronic publishing. Both Mead and Mead Data Central have their headquarters in Dayton, Ohio.
