GITANO NAMES NEW VICE CHAIRMAN, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 NEW YORK, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Gitano Group, Inc., (NYSE: GIT) today announced that C. William Crain, an industry executive well- versed in branded merchandise, has been named vice chairman, chief operating officer and a member of the board of directors. Mr. Crain's appointment has been approved by Gitano's board of directors, and is fully supported by Gitano lenders.
 Mr. Crain will be assisting chairman and chief executive officer Robert E. Gregory, Jr. in setting and executing a strategy for the company that will enable Gitano to operate efficiently and help the company achieve a profitable turnaround.
 Mr. Gregory stated, "Bill Crain knows the apparel industry, is experienced in restructuring businesses in this field, and is committed to managing established operating disciplines. His willingness to join Gitano is testimony to what can be achieved at our company. With Bill on board, we have begun to implement a streamlined operating plan supported by an appropriate financial structure, and sound management controls. We are already making important headway in these critical operating areas and are extremely encouraged by the support and commitment we are receiving from our customer accounts.
 Mr. Crain stated, "Gitano's concept of distributing branded apparel to the mass market at a great value was brilliant and I welcome the challenge of redirecting the operations of the company." He continued, "I have worked with Rob Gregory for many years and understand how he believes an organization should function. By simplifying our business, installing some key disciplines and controls, and integrating our operating functions, we will return Gitano to profitability and executive our new strategy.
 Mr. Crain, 52, most recently served as executive vice president of Crystal Brands, Inc., maker of branded men's and women's apparel and jewelry products. Mr. Crain managed Crystal Brands' $200 million men's sportswear group responsible for making Gant, Izod/Lacoste, Golf & Tennis, Izod Kids, and Izod Canada apparel. Prior to that he was group vice president for the VF Corporation where he managed the performance of Jantzen, Girbaud Jeans and VF Factory Outlets.
 Mr. Crain holds a B.A. degree in liberal arts from Duke University and an M.B.A. degree in marketing and finance from Stanford University. He resides in Greenwich, Conn. He is married and has five children and four grandchildren.
