A STAG night rapist attacked a teenage girl while carrying an inflatable sheep under his arm.

The assault has highlighted police concern about the trouble caused by the increasing number of stag parties heading for Scotland's capital.

The 17-year-old girl was waiting for a bus home at the St James Centre when she was approached by the man.

Forced He lured her away from the bus stop, forced her to the ground and raped her.

The man fled after a passer-by saw the attack and yelled at him. The girl has been left deeply traumatised by the incident, which happened a week ago.

The attacker is described as white, in his 20s, with short blond hair, thin build and possibly an English accent.

Yesterday, detectives said they believed he was part of a stag group who had come to the city for the weekend.

One officer said: 'The fact he was carrying an item linked with such parties suggests that is what he had been doing in the city centre.

'We are hoping other people involved in the group will recognise his description and contact us.'

Edinburgh has overtaken Dublin as the most popular place to hold a stag night.

More police are understood to have been assigned to the city centre at weekends to deal with rowdy stag and hen parties.

The licensing board have put forward plans for a 10pm curfew on pubs linked to trouble.
