GHS ANNOUNCES GAMMA KNIFE APPROVAL GRANTED

ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- GHS, Inc. (NASDAQ: GHSI), announced that Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., was granted a certificate of need to install a gamma knife at the hospital. U.S. NeuroSurgical, Inc.(R), a subsidiary of GHS, Inc., will own and operate the device in a joint venture with the medical center. The gamma knife is a unique stereotactic radiosurgical device used to treat brain tumors and other malformations of the brain without invasive surgery.
The certificate of need was issued after a lengthy process culminating in a hearing before the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee. The hearing sparked some controversy, because opponents argued that the adapted linear accelerator at a nearby facility, and used for the same purpose, is cheaper and performs as well as the gamma knife. This argument was neatly dispensed with by proponents of the gamma knife, including Dr. Robert Morantz, a highly respected neurosurgeon at Research. He and others presented compelling scientific evidence and numerous physicians' testimonials to convince the board that the gamma knife is far superior to the adapted linear accelerator in treating brain tumors and has future promise for treating other malfunctions that cause Parkinson's disease and epilepsy.
U.S. NeuroSurgical, Inc., will open the gamma knife center at Research Medical in June 1994. It will be the only one in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas and Oklahoma and one of only 17 in the United States. U.S. NeuroSurgical, Inc., plans to open its second facility in a major metropolitan area in late 1994.
GHS, Inc., is a health care company that, through its subsidiary, U.S. NeuroSurgical Inc., owns and operates gamma knife centers and through its subsidiary, Global Health Systems, Inc., provides services and systems to the managed care industry.
