GETTY PETROLEUM AND CHEMICAL BANK ARE SPONSORS FOR LEUKEMIA'S 'PENNIES FROM HEAVEN' JERICHO, N.Y., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Getty Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: GTY), a major marketer and distributor of petroleum products, and Chemical Bank, the largest bank in Long Island and the third largest bank in the United States, have agreed to a marketing arrangement that includes participation of more than 1,000 Getty service station locations in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. The joint sponsorship of Leukemia's Pennies from Heaven is part of a three-phase promotional campaign that officially begins on Aug. 1, 1992. On Friday, July 31, the campaign will kick off with its first major car wash event at one of Getty's service stations located at 3821 Veterans Highway, Ronkonkoma, Long Island. Employees from Getty, Chemical Bank and Leukemia will be volunteering their time by washing cars from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Special activities and prizes are planned throughout the day including local radio station, WDRE, 92.7 FM, who will be on hand to give away numerous promotional items for part of the afternoon. The cost is $3.00 a car and $6.00 a van/truck with all proceeds going to The Leukemia Society of America. Successive car washes are anticipated to take place during the month long campaign throughout the participating marketing regions. The second phase of the promotion will begin during the first week, in August. Getty operators will support the promotion by collecting pennies from Getty motorists at more than 1,000 locations throughout the tri-state area and Pennsylvania. Penny receptacles will be placed on the gasoline pump islands for motorists to drive up and contribute their pennies to help toward a cure for Leukemia. Getty and Chemical Bank will support the promotion with window posters and pole signs at all participating locations. In addition, the 1992 National "Six Hours For Life" Televent can be viewed on various local television on either Aug. 2 or 9, promoting Getty's and Chemical Bank's involvement with The Leukemia Society of America. In phase three of the promotion, Getty operators will display Ziggy "Drive In The Cure" coin boards inside their showrooms. All proceeds will benefit the Leukemia Society of America. Leo Liebowitz, president and CEO of Getty Petroleum Corp., said, "We are delighted to team with Chemical in this exciting venture. "This campaign is an example of how industry can work together to build marketing programs to address specific goals and objectives for worthwhile causes such as Leukemia." -0- 7/29/92 /CONTACT: Mary Crane of Getty Petroleum, 516-338-1450/ (GTY) CO: Getty Petroleum Corp.; Chemical Bank ST: New York IN: OIL SU:
