CONTACT lenses are one of the biggest growth areas in eyecare.

The UK leads Europe in switching to contact lenses. And the development of hassle-free disposable lenses is leading the way.

Half of contact lens wearers in the UK now wear disposables, including the new daily replacements pioneered by Boots Opticians. Costs are coming down and the range of options is increasing.

Boots aims to double sales of its disposables in the coming year with the introduction of a version for long-sighted people.

"Many people have been put off contact lenses because of the daily cleaning routine," says Boots business manager Brian Kingsley.

"Now we are finding many wearers are switching to disposables."

Boots reckons that with its Vision Plan, disposable prescription lenses cost around pounds 1 a day - and there is no risk of infection from inadequate cleaning or build-up of proteins on the lens.
