Mixing 3D levels with 2D segments, in Sonic Colours players can harness the power of the alien Wisps to boost speed, drill through the ground, hover and stick to walls and onto ceilings, upside down.

Helps with heights by turning Sonic into a rocket, blasting him skyhigh.
He'll glide back down, collecting anything in his way.
Their powers allow Sonic to become indestructible as a Blue Cube for a short while. (Exclusive to Wii)
Their power allows Sonic to utilise the Cyan Laser. This allows Sonic to shoot off at lightning speed, bouncing off obstacles.
Turns Sonic into a drill so he can burrow for hidden rings and power-ups. Don't run out of Wisp power while underground or he'll die.
Keep an eye out for them when you're flying. They give Sonic the power to hover. (Exclusive to Wii)
Utilise the powers of the Pink Wisp to transform Sonic into a Pink Spike so he can move around in all directions easily on a wall. (Exclusive to Wii)
Use White Wisps when Sonic is running to give him boost.
