GET A LITTLE CLOSER TO NATURE BY FEEDING HUMMINGBIRDS
WOOSTER, Ohio, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Feeding hummingbirds has its

own special rewards.
These small, gentle creatures capture the imagination of millions of birdwatchers across the country. Each spring, countless numbers of dauntless hummingbirds fly non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico into the United States for their summer home. They return to backyards searching for food and nesting sites.
When the hummingbirds return to backyards this spring, the Rubbermaid(R) Glass Hummingbird Feeder will be a welcome relief after the long migration.
The feeder features an 11.5 oz. glass bottle designed for easy hanging. A detachable, durable plastic base has three feeding stations with bee guards.
Normally hummingbirds start arriving in any given area about the time local flowers come into bloom. The birds fly from flower to flower, feeding almost continually because of the energy needed for their rapid wing beat.
To attract hummers, feeder placement is important. Choose a place that you've seen hummingbirds in the past or near blooming flowers.
During the first few weeks of feeding, you may want to tie eight-to-ten inch red ribbon streamers to your feeders to make them more conspicuous to hummers. As the birds become accustomed to using the feeder, gradually move it to a location that is convenient for viewing. It is always a good idea to place the feeder out of direct sunlight. If flowering plants are not located where you want your feeder it is a good idea to plant some there. A window box with flowers such as gladiolus, columbine or petunias will not only provide the birds a comfortable environment, it will also attract insects to round-out the hummers diet.
Another trick is to pick a flower where you've seen hummers feeding and place the blossom in the feeder opening. Let some of your solution seep around the petals. Once the birds get a taste, they will generally keep coming back for more.
Backyard birding is rewarding in many ways but few birds are more fascinating to watch than the tiny hummingbirds as they blanket the country each spring and summer.
