GERBER RECALLS 2ND FOODS OATMEAL WITH APPLESAUCE AND BANANAS

FREMONT, Mich., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Gerber Products Company (NYSE: GEB) today announced the voluntary recall of one day's production of GERBER 2nd FOODS OATMEAL with APPLESAUCE and BANANAS in 4-ounce jars with the BETTER IF USED BY DATE of 20 JAN 95 469 F.
Gerber initiated the action after receiving two consumer reports of foreign material in this particular oatmeal product which was produced at the Fremont, Mich., plant on Jan. 20, 1993. These reports came from the Minneapolis area, however, Gerber is making this announcement nationally as an extra precaution.
"While no injuries were reported and the likelihood of any health risk is very remote, we decided a voluntary withdrawal was in keeping with Gerber's high quality standards," said Al Piergallini, Gerber chairman, president, and CEO. "The problem has been isolated to three minutes of production and resulted from a mechanical breakdown during processing. No other oatmeal or any other products are affected."
"The Food and Drug Administration has been notified of this action, and removal of the product from retail stores and wholesale grocer warehouses is under way," Piergallini added.
Consumers with Gerber 2nd Foods Oatmeal with Applesauce and Bananas in 4-ounce jars bearing the BETTER IF USED BY DATE of 20 JAN 95 469 F should call the Gerber toll-free number, 1-800-4-GERBER, which is available 24 hours, 7 days a week.
