GEORGIANS SET NEW PEAK DEMAND RECORD

GEORGIANS SET NEW PEAK DEMAND RECORD
ATLANTA, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time this summer,

Georgia electricity consumers today established a new all-time record for energy consumption in a one-hour period, breaking the previous record set last July.
Peak demand for electricity across the state reached the new milestone between 4 and 5 p.m., eclipsing the earlier record of 16,263,000 kilowatts set last July 23.
The final record figure will not be known until calculations are completed later this evening, but the preliminary reading was 16,269,000 kilowatts. The new peak includes power supplied to Georgia Power customers, as well as customers of Oglethorpe Power Corp. and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia.
"This new record further underscores the need for greater emphasis on energy efficiency programs for our customers," said Bill Dahlberg, Georgia Power Co. president and chief executive officer. "These programs will help reduce the growth of peak demand, which will help hold down our costs and reduce customer bills. The record also is a reminder that our region continues to grow, and we must continue to consider supply-side options for meeting the needs of economic growth."
From July 1, 1991 to June 30, 1992, Georgia Power added 24,334 customers to its existing base of 1.6 million customers.
