GEORGIA-PACIFIC PURCHASES ENGINEERED LUMBER MILL

ATLANTA, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire -- Georgia-Pacific Corp. (NYSE: GP) today announced that it has purchased for an undisclosed amount an engineered lumber manufacturing facility at Roxboro, N.C., from Fiberboard Technologies Corp., a subsidiary of Fiberboard Corporation Inc. of Standard, Calif.
The facility, which has been closed for more than a year, will have an annual manufacturing capacity of approximately 25 million linear feet of engineered lumber products such as residential beams and floor joists.
Georgia-Pacific is investing several million dollars at the plant to upgrade equipment and make plant modifications to ensure the manufacture of high-quality products at competitive costs with state-of-the-art environmental operations. The facility is expected to employ 130 people and be fully operational by late spring or early summer 1994.
"Our engineered lumber products business has been growing consistently for the past several years and is an excellent fit for Georgia-Pacific's Distribution Division, with our 127 branch locations positioning us well to compete in this business on a national basis. This acquisition is one step in ensuring a consistent supply of quality products to support continued growth," Davis K. Mortensen, executive vice president - building products, said. "It also is complementary to our concentrated effort to profitably grow our engineered lumber products business, and will further enhance our commitment to growth in North Carolina."
In North Carolina, Georgia-Pacific currently employs approximately 3,000 people, operates 16 production facilities and seven distribution centers, and maintains about 190,000 acres of forest lands.
