GEORGIA BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER APPLIES TO BUILD FAYETTE COUNTY'S FIRST HOSPITAL; FAYETTE IS THE ONLY METRO ATLANTA COUNTY WITHOUT A HOSPITAL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ga., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Baptist Medical Center, one of Georgia's premier teaching hospitals, announced today it will file a Certificate-of-Need (CON) with Georgia's State Health Planning Agency to build Fayette County's first hospital, to be called Baptist South Hospital.
Georgia Baptist Medical Center plans to build a 100-bed general acute-care facility at a site on Georgia State Highway 54 and Tyrone Road, between the cities of Fayetteville, Peachtree City and Tyrone.
Celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, Georgia Baptist offers the latest medical technology available and the resources of its own School of Nursing, one of the nation's largest.
The proposed community hospital will be a private, not-for-profit facility operated as part of the Georgia Baptist Health Care System, and would require no tax support to operate.
"Fayette County has long been in need of its own acute care hospital," said David Harrell, chief executive officer of Georgia Baptist Medical Center. "The travel time to hospitals in neighboring counties has risen considerably in the past decade. Other intensive care and coronary units in south metro Atlanta are routinely at capacity and local physicians tell us they are finding it increasingly difficult to find hospital beds for their patients."
The proposed Baptist South Hospital will provide nearly all healthcare requirements for Fayette County patients including a 24-hour emergency room. Only those patients requiring highly specialized medical treatment -- such as open heart surgery -- will need to continue their healthcare at Georgia Baptist and Atlanta's tertiary-level hospitals.
The hospital will include a 12-bed critical care unit for patients requiring cardiac and other intensive care services.
Consistent with current trends in healthcare delivery, the proposed hospital will have a strong focus on outpatient care, community education and other wellness programs.
The proposed Baptist South Hospital will establish referral networks with health providers within Fayette County and the surrounding areas to assure that patients are referred for and receive needed services. Specific agreements will be established with Georgia Baptist Hospital to ensure that tertiary-level services are readily available to patients in Fayette.
Also available to the proposed hospital will be LifeFlight, Atlanta's first and only hospital-based aeromedical transport service which assures a safe and fast alternative to traditional ambulances in time-sensitive situations.
Founded on Thanksgiving Day, 1901, Georgia Baptist Medical Center is a 460-bed full-service, acute-care teaching facility which provides the finest medical attention possible to patients regardless of their ability to pay. It is one the largest private hospitals in the state of Georgia.
