GEORGE WELLS NAMED PRESIDENT OF EXAR
 SAN JOSE, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- George D. Wells, a

30-year veteran of the U.S. semiconductor industry, has been named president of Exar Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: EXAR) a $140 million manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits.
Wells has served as president and chief operating officer of LSI Logic Corp. (NYSE: LSI) since 1985. He replaces Nobuo Hatta, who in January announced his decision to return to Japan to assume a headquarter position in Kyoto with Rohm Co. Ltd., a major Japanese electronics company. Hatta has served as president of Exar since 1985 and will remain on the company's board of directors.
"Having someone of George's presence and prestige within the semiconductor industry joining Exar is a great accomplishment and reflects upon our opportunities for future growth," said Kozo Sato, the company's chairman of the board.
"Exar has been highly successful under Nobuo Hatta's leadership," he continued, "and George's knowledge, experience and vision will be invaluable to our company's ongoing development."
Founded in 1971, Exar has experienced rapid growth recently with sales increasing 86 percent since 1989. Its analog and mixed-signal products serve the telecommunications, data communications, mass storage and consumer electronics markets and many of its products incorporate such features as EEPROM memory and switched capacitor filters. The company has approximately 475 employees and operates wafer fab manufacturing facilities in Sunnyvale, Calif.
"Exar's growth and new product successes demonstrate its technological leadership and ability to address sophisticated needs of expanding markets. This is an exciting opportunity for me to provide hands-on direction for a dynamic and fast growing company," Wells commented.
"The company has a very strong product design and marketing capabilities and highly successful total quality management programs," he added.
Prior to joining LSI Logic, Wells was with the General Electric Co. (GE). He joined GE in 1983 as president and chief executive officer of its Intersil Inc. subsidiary, and later was given responsibility for GE's semiconductor operations worldwide.
Before that, he spent more than 10 years with Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corp. He held several management positions before being named senior vice president in 1977, responsible for nine of the company's 10 semiconductor divisions. He was named executive vice president in 1980, while serving as group general manager of the company's Analog and Components Group.
A native of Scotland, Wells holds a bachelor of science honors degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and did postgraduate work on nuclear physics there. He is a former professional soccer player and at one time was part owner of the San Jose Earthquakes professional soccer franchise.
