GEORGE FOREMAN COOKWARE IN TRAINING.

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill.-Extending the powerhouse name from small electrics to cookware, Salton Inc. has entered the early stage of its George Foreman cookware launch.

The cookware is being manufactured in Asia through an OEM agreement, said Barbara Westfield, vice president of brand and direct marketing. She has headed to the Far East to begin production planning. The line is expected to reach department-store shelves in limited distribution this fall.

Sears and QVC are among the retailers that will carry the cookware, said Westfield, who added, "We'll do an infomercial this fall to promote the line."

Salton will merchandise a series of approximately nine grill pans in three different materials, said Westfield. The George Foreman collection includes a die-cast pan, an aluminum pan with a nonstick coating and a hard-anodized pan. Price points range from $59.99 to $69.99.

Regarding the potential of Salton's foray into stovetop cookware, one industry source commented, "I believe consumers rely on the quality and the safeness of a brand.

"We'll see what happens. Is a name sufficient? [There is] a big question mark."
