GENTEX ANNOUNCES PURCHASE ORDERS VALUED AT NEARLY $13 MILLION ANNUALLY
ZEELAND, Mich., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX), the Zeeland-based manufacturer of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors, today announced the company has recently received new purchase orders valued at about $13 million annually from Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) and Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F). These orders are expected to contribute about $8 million in additional revenue during fiscal 1993.
Gentex has a long-term contract with Ford Motor Company to supply the automaker with all of its interior automatic-dimming mirror needs through the end of the 1994 model year. The company has supplied its automatic-dimming Night Vision Safety(TM) (NVS) Mirrors to Chrysler Corporation since 1989.
The new purchase orders are for 1993-1/2 and 1994 model vehicles, including applications for three pick-up trucks, one sport utility vehicle and one sedan.
"The application of our Night Vision Safety(TM) Mirrors to a broader vehicle base shows Gentex that our customers do not perceive the NVS(TM) Mirror as strictly a feature for luxury cars," said Gentex Executive Vice President Kenneth LaGrand. "Their willingness to continue to spread the application across a wider range of vehicles is very promising to us."
Gentex NVS(TM) Mirrors are offered as standard equipment or in options packages on 53 foreign and domestic 1993 model vehicles. Seven Chrysler models and seven Ford models currently offer the NVS(TM) Mirrors.
The price of Gentex common stock has declined since the beginning of the trial on Sept. 8 regarding the patent-infringement suit against Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON).
"We believe that price adjustments due to competitive pressures, coupled with the financial market's nervousness over this patent litigation, has been the underlying cause of this weakness in our stock price," said LaGrand. "Gentex is confident in the strength of its patents and its position that was presented in the trial. However, we do not believe that any party should speculate as to the outcome of this complex case, the initial phase of which took over 13 days to try in the Federal District Court. Judge Gibson has indicated that his goal is to make a decision before mid-December, and it would be difficult for anyone to predict with any certainty what his decision will be."
Gentex Corporation develops, manufactures and markets proprietary electro-optical products: patented automatic-dimming Interior and Exterior Night Vision Safety(TM) Mirrors for the worldwide motor vehicle industry, and an extensive line of fire-protection products for commercial applications.
Gentex was the first company in the world to produce a commercial electrochromic NVS(TM) Mirror for the motor vehicle industry, and is the leading supplier of NVS(TM) Mirrors to the worldwide automotive industry.
