GENSIA HIRES NEW RESEARCH DIRECTORS IN
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM PHARMACOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY
SAN DIEGO, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Gensia Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: GNSA) today announced that Alan C. Foster, Ph.D., has joined the company as director of central nervous system (CNS) pharmacology, and Gary S. Firestein, M.D., has joined the company as director of immunology. Foster will direct Gensia research programs in cerebrovascular and neurological diseases, and Firestein will develop and manage Gensia's research program in inflammation.

Before joining Gensia, Foster spent eight years at Merck, Sharpe and Dohme Ltd., most recently as a section leader in the Neuroscience Research Centre in Essex, England. Foster was awarded a bachelor's degree in physiology and biochemistry and a Ph.D. in neuropharmacology from the University of Southampton in England. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Irvine and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is a member of the British Pharmacological Society and the Society for Neuroscience and is a noted speaker on neurochemistry and excitatory amino acids.
Prior to joining Gensia, Firestein was assistant professor of medicine in residence at the University of California, San Diego where he has been employed in the division of rheumatology for nine years. Firestein holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Harvard University and was awarded a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and recently received the Henry Christian Award for Excellence in Research from the American Federation for Clinical Research.
