GENERON SYSTEMS SIGNS CONTRACT WITH KAZAKHSTAN

HOUSTON, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Generon Systems, a Dow Chemical/BOC Group joint venture, has signed a contract with the Kazakhstan Ministry of Agriculture to build three Controlled Atmosphere storage warehouses for the long term storage of apples in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This is the first agreement signed to build Controlled Atmosphere warehouses in Kazakhstan, a former Soviet Republic which is now an independent country.
The final value of the project was not disclosed but is a multi- million dollar value. Generon Systems was assisted in the negotiations by Maya International of Houston.
The signing of this contract is the culmination of over a year and a half of negotiation between Generon Systems and the Ministry of Agriculture. The first of the three buildings is scheduled for construction in 1994 with the subsequent buildings scheduled for construction in 1995 and 1996. The long term storage facilities will be constructed near Almaty. These warehouses will use Generon Systems nitrogen generating, hollow fiber membrane technology to supply gaseous nitrogen.
"We are very pleased with the signing of this contract," said Mike Porter, president of Generon Systems. "We feel that our technology and experience in long term storage of fruit and vegetables are a plus both for us and the people of Kazakhstan."
A letter of protocol, containing the general parameters of the agreement, was signed in Almaty during May of this year. The signing in Houston today successfully concludes over a year of negotiations between Generon Systems and the Ministry of Agriculture.
Controlled atmosphere storage is the process of controlling the atmosphere around food products to retard spoilage and extend the saleable shelf life of the products. The ripening process is delayed in a low oxygen environment. The respiration rate is reduced and ripening agents are continually removed.
Generon Systems technology is currently being used to store over 500,000 bins of apples in Washington State. Generon Systems also has installations in Central America and on board ships for banana storage and transportation.
Nitrogen is an inert gas that can be used to displace oxygen inside produce storage facilities, thus slowing the ripening process. The Generon HP membrane module is compact, lightweight and has no moving parts. The Generon HP membrane is an ideal source for separating gaseous nitrogen directly from compressed air. Each membrane module contains millions of hollow, hair like polymeric hollow fibers that collectively separate large amounts of gaseous nitrogen from compressed air.
Compressed air passes through a bundle of the membrane fibers. The relatively "fast" gases like oxygen permeate the surface of the membrane and are vented back to the atmosphere. Nitrogen remains inside the membrane and is delivered as the product gas.
