GENERAL WESTBROOK JOINS ABEX NWL AEROSPACE

 KALAMAZOO, Mich., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Abex NWL Aerospace, a division of Abex Inc. (NYSE: ABE), has appointed former U.S. Air Force Major General Sam W. Westbrook III, an ex-fighter pilot and Rhodes scholar, to head its military products business as vice president and general manager.
 As Air Force director of operations and readiness from 1989 to 1991, General Westbrook directed operations at eight Air Force bases. He earlier served as commandant of cadets of the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
 As commander of the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing, based in Lakenheath, England, he planned and participated in the 1986 air raid on Libya, leading nearly 60 fighter and tanker aircraft on the 6,000-mile night mission in radio silence.
 A 1963 graduate of the Air Force Academy, he received graduate degrees from Oxford University, Oxford, England, where he was a Rhodes scholar. His professional development included study at the Armed Forces Staff College, the National War College and Columbia University.
 From 1975 to 1980, he served on the professional staff of the National Security Council in Washington, D.C. After retiring from the Air Force in 1991, General Westbrook became president of PAR Government Systems Corporation, New Hartford, N.Y., a high-technology company serving the Department of Defense and Federal intelligence agencies.
 Since 1986, he has been a member of the board of directors of the United Services Automobile Association, a leading insurance and financial services company.
 General Westbrook and his wife, Kate, will be relocating to the Kalamazoo area from their present home in Clinton, N.Y.
 In his new position, General Westbrook succeeds Kenneth Burns, who has been promoted to executive vice president of Abex NWL Aerospace, which manufactures flight, engine and missile control systems.
