 GENERAL SIGNAL NAMES NEW PRESIDENT AT SOLA ELECTRIC
 STAMFORD, Conn., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- General Signal Corporation


(NYSE: GSX) announced today the appointment of Michael J. Cheshire as president of its Sola Electric unit. Based in Chicago, Sola Electric, with worldwide sales of over $130 million, is a major manufacturer of power conditioning and protection products.
 Cheshire joined General Signal in 1975 as a manager of technical applications of the Terryville, Conn.-based O-Z/Gedney, the company's electrical fittings and enclosures operation. He held a number of increasingly responsible management positions and was named vice president of marketing in 1982 and president in 1988. According to Peter A. Laing, senior vice president-operations for General Signal, "Mike has a great track record at O-Z/Gedney and his proven leadership skills and strong operational and marketing expertise will be very helpful to Sola in its pursuit of profitable growth and world class status."
 Cheshire holds a B.S. degree in applied physics from Dowling College. He and his family will be relocating to the Chicago area.
 General Signal Corporation, with 1991 sales of $1.6 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and instruments for the process control, electrical, semiconductor and telecommunications industries.
