GENERAL SIGNAL NAMES BUTLER PRESIDENT OF O-Z/GEDNEY

 STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- General Signal Corporation (NYSE: GSX) announced today the appointment of Scott Butler as president of its O-Z/Gedney unit. Based in Terryville, Conn., O-Z/Gedney is a major manufacturer of a complete line of electrical fittings and of explosion proof enclosures and lighting products for hazardous locations.
 Mr. Butler, 46, joins General Signal from Harnischfeger Industries where he was vice president and general manager of its mining equipment division since 1989. Prior to Harnischfeger Mr. Butler spent 18 years with General Electric Co. in a number of senior, domestic and international marketing and sales positions. He last served as general manager, marketing and sales department of G.E. Transportation Systems in Erie, Pa.
 Commenting on the appointment, Edmund M. Carpenter, General Signal's Chairman and CEO, said: "In Mr. Butler we have a seasoned and innovative leader who will help O-Z/Gedney further leverage their expanding product offering and significant distribution strength". Mr. Butler replaces Michael Cheshire who was appointed president of General Signal's Sola Electric unit several months ago.
 Mr. Butler holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from Rutgers University and a MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He will be relocating with his wife and three children to the Terryville area.
 General Signal Corporation, with 1992 sales of $1.6 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and instruments for the process control, electrical, and industrial technology industries.
