GENERAL SIGNAL COMPLETES SALE OF ULTRATECH STEPPER UNIT

 STAMFORD, Conn., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- General Signal (NYSE: GSX) announced today the sale of its Ultratech Stepper unit to the company's management, led by Arthur W. Zafiropoulo, 54, president of Ultratech Stepper. Ultratech Stepper will continue to be based in Santa Clara, Calif., where the company manufactures photolithography systems for the worldwide semiconductor industry. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
 "This is the first semiconductor equipment business we have sold since we announced plans to divest these operations in January," said Stephen W. Nagy, chief financial officer for General Signal and the executive in charge of the divestiture effort. "We are pleased with the agreement and very happy with the progress we've made to date on divesting these businesses." Mr. Nagy said the company is actively considering several proposals for the remaining units and is evaluating potential transactions at an aggressive pace.# # #
