 GENERAL SIGNAL APPOINTS GATES TO ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL
 STAMFORD, Conn., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- General Signal Corporation (NYSE: GSX) announced today the promotion of Senior Attorney Signe S. Gates to assistant general counsel. Gates will continue to report to Edgar J. Smith Jr., General Signal's vice president, general counsel and secretary.
 According to Smith, "The position of assistant general counsel recognizes the length of service and outstanding contributions Ms. Gates has made to General Signal and the legal profession, especially in regard to the role that acquisitions and divestitures play in the daily affairs of the company."
 Gates divides her responsibilities between corporate acquisitions and divestitures, and general commercial legal work. In addition to providing the company's units with legal advice, the general corporate area includes contract and lease negotiations, legal dispute resolution, counseling on a variety of corporate legal issues, and employment- related matters.
 Gates joined General Signal in 1985 as an attorney. She was promoted to senior attorney in 1988. Before coming to General Signal, Gates was the corporate attorney at Tetley, Inc. Earlier, she was a corporate associate with the Stamford law firm of Cummings & Lockwood.
 Gates holds a B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from Susquehanna University and a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. She resides in Wilton, Conn.
 General Signal Corporation, with 1990 sales of $1.69 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and systems for the process control, electrical, semiconductor and telecommunications industries.
