GENERAL SIGNAL AGREES TO ACQUIRE FIRE ALARM AND SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY, INC.
STAMFORD, Conn., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- According to an announcement made today by Edmund M. Carpenter, chairman and chief executive officer of General Signal Corporation (NYSE: GCX), the company has reached an agreement in principal to acquire Fire Alarm and Systems Technology Inc. (FAST). Carpenter stated that, "The acquisition of FAST, which has annual sales of between $20 and $30 million, is part of a continuing effort to augment General Signal's product offerings for key markets served by our Electrical and Process Controls sectors."
FAST, which is located in Sarasota, Fla., will be consolidated into the fire alarm division of the company's Edwards unit to form a new business entity -- Edwards Systems Technology (EST). Peter A. Laing, senior vice president-operations for General Signal's Electrical Controls sector, stated that, "The combination of Edwards' traditional strength in standard fire alarm products, coupled with FAST's line of advanced multiplex fire alarm control equipment, produces the most comprehensive fire alarm product line in North America."
This is the third "bolt-on" type of acquisition for Edwards in as many years, bringing Edwards sales volume to in excess of $200 million. Edwards, a unit of General Signal since 1962, has for over a century designed, engineered and manufactured fire alarm systems and signaling equipment. Edwards products can be found in buildings throughout the U.S. and Canada and in more than 50 foreign countries.
General Signal Corporation, with 1991 sales of $1.62 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and instruments for the process control, electrical, semiconductor and telecommunications industries.
