GENERAL SIGNAL ACQUIRES RYKEN TUBE GROUP

GENERAL SIGNAL ACQUIRES RYKEN TUBE GROUP
STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- According to an announcement

made today by Edmund M. Carpenter, chairman and chief executive officer of General Signal Corporation (NYSE: GSX), the company has completed the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of the Ryken Tube Group for its Columbus, Ohio-based Metal Forge unit. Ryken, located in Walled Lake, Mich., produces and distributes a variety of automotive tubular parts, including catalytic converter systems sold as in-warranty replacement parts.
Commenting on the announcement, Peter Laing, senior vice president- operations for General Signal's Electrical Controls Sector, said: "Ryken's significant sales to the aftermarket will diversify Metal Forge's existing business of original equipment parts. In addition, Ryken's tubular know-how will augment Metal Forge's capabilities to design and manufacture lightweight tubular products as alternatives for heavier solid bar designs, which is becoming increasingly important for the next generation designs as auto makers look to make cars more lightweight and energy efficient."
Mr. Carpenter stated that "The purchase of Ryken represents General Signal's eighth "bolt-on" acquisition this year, continuing our effort to grow the competitive positions of our key business units." The addition of Ryken, with sales between $20 and $30 million, brings Metal Forge's annual sales volume to over $100 million.
Metal Forge, a unit of General Signal since 1972, is a leading supplier of cold and warm-formed metal components and assemblies to the automotive and bicycle markets.
General Signal Corporation, with 1991 sales of $1.6 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and instruments for the process control, electrical, semiconductor and telecommunications industries.
