GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION EARNS REBATE, LOWERS BILLS WITH ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

LOS ANGELES, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States General Services Administration (GSA) installed an energy management system in its West Los Angeles field office, earning a Southern California Edison rebate of more than $200,000. The system will also save the GSA about $500,000 per year on their energy bills.
The rebate check was presented by Gerard Zellers, Edison energy services representative to Aki Nakao, GSA's deputy regional administrator and John Walsh, GSA's field office manager.
"Energy efficiency measures are a quick, cost-effective way for large or small businesses to get a handle on their energy costs," said Zellers. "After rebate, GSA's simple payback time on their energy efficiency investment of $667,431 is less than one year."
The GSA installed an energy management system which, among other things, controls more than 26,000 fluorescent lamps covering nearly 600,000 square feet at their facilities at Wilshire and Veteran Avenue. Prior to system installation, the lamps were operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The lamps now operate 16 hours a day, five days a week.
"These energy efficiency measures not only save the GSA money, but they help other Edison customers, too," Zellers said. "When energy is used most efficiently, air quality is improved and there is less need to build costly, new power plants.
Principal tenants at the site include the Federal Bureau ofInvestigation, Veterans Administration, National Weather Service. Armed Forces Public Affairs, Los Angeles Passport Office, Social Security Administration and some Congressional offices.
