GENERAL SEMICONDUCTOR TO SELL ITS IRISH OPERATIONS, OTHER ASSETS
PALATINE, Ill., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Square D Company, parent company of General Semiconductor Industries, Inc. ("GSI"), announced that it had reached an agreement to sell all of GSI's operations in Ireland, certain product lines currently in production in Tempe and other assets to General Instrument Corp. ("GI").
Square D will continue its previously announced plans to move manufacturing operations from GSI's Tempe, Ariz., facility to Macroom, Ireland. The company plans to discontinue manufacturing operations at Tempe. Moving certain manufacturing operations from Tempe is consistent with the agreement provisions.
John Garrett, vice president of Square D's automation and industrial control business, said, "Centralizing certain product lines in Ireland is in keeping with GSI's long-term business strategy. The sale to General Instrument Corporation fits with this strategy."
Acquired by Square D in 1981, GSI is a leader in the market for transient voltage suppression products. The company is a key supplier of semiconductor components such as transient suppression diodes, power transistors and surge suppressors to computer, telecommunication and military customers.
Approximately 160 employees at the GSI facility in Tempe were informed today that manufacturing operations will be discontinued. Eligible employees affected by the closing will be provided with both severance benefits and outplacement services.
