GENERAL RENT-A-CAR SPONSORS $100,000 PACESETTER AWARD FOR CAREER ENHANCEMENT IN ZEREX SAAB PRO SERIES

GENERAL RENT-A-CAR SPONSORS $100,000 PACESETTER AWARD
FOR CAREER ENHANCEMENT IN ZEREX SAAB PRO SERIES
HOLLYWOOD, Fla., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- General Rent-A-Car today announced that it will sponsor the largest championship bonus in American openwheel auto racing outside of Indycars; the General Rent-A-Car $100,000 Pacesetter Award for Career Enhancement will be awarded to the season champion of the 1992 Zerex Saab Pro Series (formerly the Barber Saab Pro Series). General also announced its continuing sponsorship of Zerex Saab driver Leo Parente of Los Angeles.
The General Rent-A-Car $100,000 Pacesetter Award For Career Enhancement is intended to provide substantial seed money to further the racing career of the Zerex Saab Pro Series champion. This innovative and unique award, created in 1989 by Saab Cars USA, Inc., and Skip Barber, is a major element of the sponsorship program General unveiled today for the Zerex Saab series.
Parente finished fifth in the 1991 championship and was the only driver other than champion Bryan Herta and runner-up Johnny Robinson to win a race. A California-based marketing executive, Parente was voted "1991 Most Improved Driver" by the Series and again will carry the General Rent-A-Car colors for 1992.
General, which owns and operates rental locations nationwide, will serve again as an associate sponsor and the Official Rental Car Company of Zerex Saab. General also will present $250, $100 and $50 contingency awards to the top three finishers in each of the year's 12 races.
"In our second sponsorship year of the Zerex Saab Pro Series, we are proud to reward the dedication and skill it takes to be a winner in motor racing," said General Rent-A-Car president and CEO F. Paul Silicato. "At General Rent-A-Car, our company motto is 'Going All Out' and that's just the philosophy these up-and-coming drivers represent at the track."
Zerex Saab is America's premier talent showcase series. Twenty-eight identically prepared Indycar-style race cars, powered by stock Saab Turbocharged engines, are rented to professional drivers on a per-race or seasonal basis. Unique in all of auto racing, the entire series is self-contained, run by a 30-person staff of Zerex Saab technicians, mechanics and administrative personnel. The series is sanctioned by IMSA (International Motor Sports Association), with its seventh season scheduled to begin Feb. 23 at the Miami Grand Prix.
"We are very excited to see General take advantage of what is easily the most visible championship bonus in American training ground racing," Skip Barber said. "By sponsoring a series that produces tomorrow's racing stars, General Rent-A-Car shows a commitment beyond dollars and cents."
General Rent-A-Car will receive prominent exposure at Zerex Saab Pro Series events in 1992. The General logo will be featured on all series and Skip Barber Racing School cars, and series transporters. All Zerex Saab Pro Series and Skip Barber Racing School uniforms will bear General patches. Zerex Saab drivers must wear General Rent-A-Car identification to qualify for both the contingency monies and the General Rent-A-Car $100,000 Pacesetter Award For Career Enhancement.
General's sponsorship of the Zerex Saab Pro Series is part of a major motorsports marketing plan the company developed in 1990. Last year, Indy 500 winner Danny Sullivan was introduced as General Rent-A-Car's spokesperson and now is featured in General's advertising.
General promotes its services to motorsports participants and racing enthusiasts, featuring low rates, free unlimited miles, and a full line of air bag-equipped Chryler automobiles. Reservations or information can be obtained by calling a travel agent or General at 800-327-7607.
