GENERAL PARCEL SERVICE ANNOUNCES NEW FACILITY TO BE BUILT IN ORLANDO
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- General Parcel Service, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPSX) (GPS) today announced that it is breaking ground on a new 20,000 square foot hub facility for its Florida operation. The facility will house both local city operations and overnight inter-city transfer operations. The new terminal will feature state-of-the-art technology in mechanical sorting equipment and will accommodate 18 inter-city trailers and 28 local delivery vans. A separate maintenance facility and a storage yard will also be constructed on the 3.5 acre complex.
According to GPS President, E. Hoke Smith Jr., the new facility is necessary to support the company's rapid growth.
"Our 50+ percent per year revenue growth rates over the past three years have put a strain on our main sorting hub in Orlando. The new facility will almost double our capacity and will also provide operating efficiencies that we have not enjoyed in the past. We've learned some things about sort and transfer in our six years of delivering packages in Florida. This terminal is designed to fit our specific needs."
Ground-breaking is scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 29, 1992, at the construction site at 2121 Landstreet Road in Orlando, Fla.
GPS is a regional business-to-business small package delivery company, which began operations in Jacksonville, Fla. in 1985 with one truck. Since then, the company has expanded to 13 terminals serving Florida and Georgia with 300 vehicles. Future plans call for expansion into the Carolinas. GPS is a publicly traded company which is listed on NASDAQ under the symbol GPSX.
