GENERAL NUTRITION COMPANIES, INC. ANNOUNCES RESULTS

PITTSBURGH, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- General Nutrition Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: GNCI) (GNC) today announced that first quarter revenue is expected to be $124 million, a 15.9 percent increase over the first quarter of 1992.
Comparable store sales increased 9.5 percent for the quarter. William E. Watts, president and CEO of General Nutrition Companies, Inc., said, "The increase in comparable store sales is especially significant, given inclement weather on the East Coast in mid-March which severely curtailed business in more than 50 percent of the company's retail locations." First quarter earnings, when released next week, are expected to exceed analyst estimates of $0.25 per share and the prior year of $0.10 per share when the prior year is calculated on a proforma basis as if the company's recent public offering of common stock had occurred on the first day of 1992.
"The company's new store opening program is well under way," Watts added. In the first quarter, 53 new GNC stores opened, of which 21 were company stores and 32 were franchise locations.
"Revenue in the company's franchise division is expected to be $12.9 million, an increase of 77.5 percent over the first quarter of the prior year," he said. In addition, comparable store sales for franchised stores increased by 17.4 percent over the prior year first quarter. Franchising awarded 79 stores in the first quarter vs. 30 stores last year in the first quarter. At May 1, 1993 there were 95 franchises awarded but not yet opened.
"General Nutrition Products, the company's manufacturing division, expects revenue to be $8.9 million, a 56.1 percent increase over 1992's first quarter," Watts said.
General Nutrition's common stock became publicly traded on Jan. 21, 1993, and trades on the NASDAQ National Market System.
General Nutrition Companies, Inc., the largest specialty retailer of vitamin, sports nutrition and other nutritional supplement products in the country, currently operates 1,269 General Nutrition Center stores, of which 948 are company stores and 321 are franchise locations.
