Comments by James B. Fitzpatrick, vice president for the General Motors Communications and Marketing Staff:
For the month of October, U.S. car and truck sales are expected to improve to an annual selling rate above 13 million units -- which is an increase from earlier in the year and is above the industry sales level achieved in the 1991 model year.
Despite a stubbornly slow economic recovery and lower overall industry vehicle sales this calendar year, we expect GM's U.S. market share will improve as more of our all-new 1992 car and truck models reach dealer showrooms.
GM is particularly well-positioned in the marketplace with one of the most extensive new model launches in the corporation's history. Automotive press accounts of GM's 15 new 1992 models have been very favorable, and early sales reports of these all-new 1992 models are encouraging, even during these rough times.
