GENERAL MOTORS MAY BUILD MINIVANS IN CHINA, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS REPORTS

DETROIT, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) is scouting for a Chinese partner to begin building as many as 150,000 Chevrolet Lumina minivans a year in China -- more than three times the number sold in the United States last year, the trade paper Automotive News reports in its Jan. 18 edition.
According to a senior GM official quoted by the publication, GM is close to finding a local assembler and could begin semi-knockdown kit assembly of the front-drive, plastic-body minivan later this year at an initial rate of 3,000 to 4,000 units a year. Production would then expand to 100,000-150,000 units a year within the parameters of China's official five-year plan for the auto industry, Automotive News reports.
"We're seeing an enormous amount of interest in (local assembly) of the APV in China," Thomas McDaniel, GM's vice president of Asia-Pacific operations, is quoted as saying. "There seems to be a very strong preference in China for the Lumina over competitive vehicles. The Chinese apparently like it better than Americans do."
The venture would be GM's second in China. The automaker began producing S10 pickup trucks at Shenyang in far eastern China last year in a joint venture with Jinbei Automotive Co. GM has a 30-percent stake in the venture.
Automotive News is published each Monday in Detroit by Crain Communications Inc., a privately held company that publishes 25 consumer, business and trade publications.
