GENERAL MOTORS ELECTS DR. LOUIS W. SULLIVAN AND JOHN H. BRYAN TO BOARD

 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The election of two new members to the General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) board of directors was announced today by John G. Smale, chairman of the board, and John F. Smith, Jr., GM CEO and president.
 The new directors are Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, president of the Morehouse School of Medicine and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and John H. Bryan, chairman and CEO of Sara Lee Corporation.
 Dr. Sullivan, 59, recently returned to Morehouse after serving as Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1989 to 1993. As Secretary, he was responsible for improving the nation's health care services, and for managing the largest budget of any federal agency.
 A native of Atlanta, Dr. Sullivan was an honors graduate of Morehouse College and the Boston University Medical School. An administrator who is also a medical specialist in hematology, Dr. Sullivan has held a variety of positions in both research and education. He was a founder of the Morehouse School of Medicine in 1975, and was its president when he joined the cabinet.
 Mr. Bryan, 56, is a Mississippi native and graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis. He began his career in 1960 with Bryan Foods, a family owned and operated meat business, which he sold to Consolidated Foods Corporation in 1968. Mr. Bryan continued to manage Bryan Foods, and in 1974 he was named president of Consolidated Foods. He became chief executive officer of Consolidated Foods the following year, and assumed the chairman's post in 1976. Consolidated Foods changed its name to Sara Lee Corporation in 1985.
 Chicago-based Sara Lee is a global consumer goods company which manufactures and markets leading brand name products in such diverse categories as processed meats, frozen baked goods, underwear, hosiery, knitwear, intimate apparel, coffee and shoecare.
 With the addition of these two executives, the GM board now consists of 17 members, 14 of whom are independent outside directors.
