GENERAL MOTORS AND UAW TRUCK CONVOY TO DELIVER SUPPLIES
TO HURRICANE VICTIMS IN SOUTH FLORIDA
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The UAW and General Motors (NYSE: GM) are responding to disaster relief efforts in south Florida by providing a convoy of four 18-wheel tractor-trailer trucks to deliver food, clothing and other supplies to assist victims of Hurricane Andrew.
The truck convoy, which is expected to depart at 4 p.m. today from the Salvation Army warehouse located at 1627 W. Fort Street in downtown Detroit, is part of the international relief operations spearheaded by the American Red Cross. The supplies are expected to reach a Salvation Army distribution center in Hialeah, Fla., by Thursday, Sept. 3.
"We want to help the people of south Florida recover from the ravages of the hurricane," said UAW Vice President Stephen P. Yokich and GM Vice President Gerald A. Knechtel. "Supplies have been coming in from all parts of Michigan and there's a tremendous need to get them to Florida," they added.
Drivers of the four trucks in the convoy are all UAW-represented GM workers from the GM Proving Ground in Milford, Mich.
