GENERAL MILLS FOUNDATION, RED LOBSTER AND OLIVE GARDEN PLEDGE $125,000
TO RED CROSS AND SECOND HARVEST
Total to Hurricane Andrew Relief: $425,063
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The General Mills Foundation today announced grants of $100,000 for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and $25,000 for emergency expenses at Second Harvest. General Mills and its Florida-based restaurant operations, Red Lobster and the Olive Garden, already have provided $300,000 worth of food to Florida and Louisiana residents.
Since August 25, the company has delivered 136,573 pounds of dry packaged food to Second Harvest in Orlando and Second Harvester in New Orleans. Red Lobster has contributed 5,865 hot meals in afflicted areas.
The General Mills food donation included Big G cereals such as Cheerios, Total and Triples; Gold Medal flour; and other miscellaneous foodstuffs.
In addition, General Mills Restaurant employees have donated and distributed 40,000 pounds of food to hurricane victims. They also have collected three tractor trailers of clothing and almost $50,000 for disaster relief. "Our employees have been outstanding throughout this difficult time," said Jeff O'Hara, president, Red Lobster. "They've helped fellow employees, their neighbors, other people in the community, when they often times were victims themselves."
At its annual meeting next week, General Mills will recognize its Miami-area restaurant employees for their selfless concern and community involvement.
General Mills also has contacted Second Harvest about food needs in Hawaii in response to Hurricane Iniki damage. The company will work closely with disaster relief agencies to assess overall needs.
