GENERAL INTEREST.

Industry Insight

For a small state, Arkansas has had a notable outside influence on the business world.

Some of the biggest and best-known public companies in the world--like Walmart Inc. of Bentonville and Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale--are based here. They employ tens of thousands and are part of millions of consumers' lives.

Walmart, for example, employs more than 50,000 in Arkansas and 2.3 million people around the world. Tysons products--chicken, beef and pork with brand names like Hillshire Farm and Ball Park -are found in almost every kitchen.

But even some of the state's privately held companies are familiar far outside Arkansas' borders. Stephens Inc., the investment company based in Little Rock, is well known on Wall Street. Poultry producers Mountaire Corp., also of Little Rock, and Simmons Foods Inc of Siloam Springs are known to consumers around the country, as is Riceland Foods Inc., the farmer-owned cooperative based in Stuttgart.

The state's nonprofits have an outside influence as well: The Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation and Heifer International both call Little Rock home. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opened in Bentonville in 2011, making the heartland home to one of the most important (and expensive) collections of art in the world.
