GENERAL INSTRUMENT AND TCI SIGN DEFINITIVE AGREEMENT FOR DIGITAL COMPRESSION CABLE CONVERTERS

 CHICAGO, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corp. (NYSE: GIC) today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement with Tele- Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: TCOMA) for the sale of dual mode DigiCipher II/MPEG-2 set-top cable TV converter terminals employing GI's digital compression technology and its access control and encryption technology. The agreement finalizes the letter of intent signed by GI and TCI which was part of TCI's December 1992 announcement that it intended to increase cable television capacity to 500 channels.
 The agreement includes a blanket purchase order for 1,000,000 converter terminals and related equipment. Pricing was not disclosed. As previously announced, GI will broadly license its digital compression technology for use in the cable and satellite television and consumer electronics industries.
 General Instrument is a world leader in broadband communications, distribution and access control technologies for cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcasting applications, as well as in discrete power rectifying components.
