GENERAL INSTRUMENT ADDS THREE LEADING TECHNOLOGY EXECUTIVES TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 CHICAGO, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) today announced that it has named three leading technology executives to its 12-member board of directors. The new outside directors are Daniel F. Akerson, president and chief operating officer of MCI Communications Corporation; John Seely Brown, chief scientist and corporate vice president of Xerox Corporation; and Morton H. Meyerson, chairman and chief executive officer of Perot Systems.
 Akerson has been president and chief operating officer of MCI since 1992. He has held a number if positions at MCI since 1983, including chief financial officer and vice president, engineering. He is a director of CRAY Research, Inc.
 Brown has been Xerox's chief scientist since 1992. He is also director of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center which focuses on fundamental research in physics, computer science and human/computer communications. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence and a member of the National Academy of Education.
 Meyerson has been chairman and CEO of Perot Systems since 1992. He was previously president and vice chairman of EDS. He serves on a number if corporate and advisory boards, including the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
 The three replace Frank G. Hickey, former GI chairman, who retired earlier this year, Brian Little, a general partner of Forstmann Little & Co., and James M. Denny, vice chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Co. The board cited Messrs. Hickey, Little and Denny for their substantial contributions to GI, particularly in connection with its reemergence as a publicly traded company.
 General Instrument is a world leader in broadband communications, distribution and access control technologies for cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcasting applications, as well as in discreet power rectifying components.
