FAIRFIELD, Conn., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) today announced that it has named W. James McNerney, Jr., 43, to the position of president, GE South Asia and a senior vice president of GE. In this position, which reports to GE's corporate executive office, McNerney will lead GE's international activities in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and India. He will be based in Hong Kong.
"Jim McNerney is one of GE's dynamic leaders," said GE Chairman and CEO John F. Welch, Jr. "His expertise in running a broad array of GE businesses will be key in helping Jim drive GE's overall efforts in these high growth markets."
Paolo Fresco, GE vice chairman and executive officer, said: "Jim's appointment to this new position is indicative of GE's commitment to globalization. We are adding some of our best resources in Asia, and we will vigorously participate in this important market."
Fresco noted that GE had nearly $2 billion in orders in the region last year, and that he expected it to be the fastest growing area of the world in the next decade.
"We've had strong sales in this region for many of our businesses, such as power generation, aircraft engines, plastics, medical systems and locomotives," said Fresco, "and we are confident those businesses will continue their rapid sales growth while our other businesses actively work to strengthen their positions in this exciting part of the world."
McNerney comes to his new post with broad company experience, having led several of GE's manufacturing, information services, and financial services operations. He was previously president and CEO of GE Electrical Distribution and Control, one of GE's 13 key businesses. He has also served as president of GE Information Services, a global supplier of network computer services, and general manager of GE Mobile Communications, a world wide supplier of mobile radio and communications equipment.
McNerney holds a bachelor of arts degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard University. He, his wife Haity, and two children, will reside in Hong Kong.
GE is the world's largest diversified technology, manufacturing and services company with a commitment to achieving worldwide leadership in each of its 13 major businesses: aerospace, aircraft engines, broadcasting, electrical distribution equipment, electric motors, financial services, industrial and power systems, information services, lighting, locomotives, major appliances, medical systems and plastics.
