GENERAL ELECTRIC AND EDS ANNOUNCE GLOBAL DESKTOP SERVICES AGREEMENT
DALLAS, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- General Electric (NYSE: GE) has awarded EDS a global contract to provide desktop services that include procurement of personal computer products, peripherals and software, EDS announced today. Financial terms of the comprehensive five-year contract were not disclosed.
The EDS Technical Products Division will provide PCs and related products and services under the newly created GE/EDS Desktop Computing Program. The goals for the program are to improve service, response time, quality, productivity, financial control and flexibility. GE also expects to reduce costs to its global businesses.
Services related to the program could include maintenance, installation, help desk, quote desk, asset management, on-site support and several other services. The new program, which includes an employee purchase plan, calls for a reduction in the variety of PCs and related equipment currently sold to GE through various retailers, dealers and manufacturers. A Standard Systems Catalog will be deployed to create standards and simplify the procurement process for all GE businesses.
General Electric's Computer Services business (GECS) and EDS will cooperate to meet GE's computing needs. GECS is the largest provider of rental personal computers in the country and is recognized as having a leading field service and support offering.
"We believe this program will enable us to standardize our systems and substantially reduce our costs," said Jim Miller, GE's manager of Computing and Product Technology.
"GE is on the forefront of corporations by bringing a strong measure of control and predictability to their PC environment," said Robert Neighbors, president of EDS' Technical Products Division. "We intend to help GE take advantage of change in their PC environment and bring greater value through EDS services."
GE is a $58 billion diversified technology, manufacturing and services corporation with a commitment to achieving world-wide leadership in each of its thirteen major businesses: aerospace, aircraft engines, broadcasting, electrical distribution equipment, communications, electric motors, financial services, industrial and power systems, lighting, locomotives, major appliances, medical systems and plastics.
Technical Products Division, ranked among the top personal computer resellers in the world, is a business unit of EDS and provides desktop solutions for customers in Manufacturing, Retail, Energy, Transportation, Financial, Communications and other industries. EDS has operations in 28 countries, employs 65,000 people worldwide and is a leader in providing information technology services. Stock reflecting EDS' performance is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol GME. In 1990, EDS reported revenues of $6.1 billion.
