GENERAL DYNAMICS NAMES ENGLAND, TETRAULT, PSIHAS AND WYNNE
 AS CORE BUSINESS PRESIDENTS
FALLS CHURCH, Va., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE: GD) today announced the latest step in its on- going effort to empower each of the company's major platform businesses to take those actions necessary to more efficiently and effectively perform for its customers in light of continuing changes in U.S. defense budgets and priorities.
In order to further shift the authority for both business strategy and financial performance to the senior managements of the company's core businesses, the company named the following individuals as presidents of their business units: Gordon England, president of Aircraft Systems (military aircraft); Roger Tetrault, president of Electric Boat (nuclear submarines); George Psihas, president of Land Systems (armored vehicles); and Mike Wynne, president of Space Systems (space launch systems). In addition, England will continue as a corporate executive vice president of parent General Dynamics Corporation and Tetrault, Psihas, and Wynne will continue as corporate vice presidents of the parent corporation.
General Dynamics Chairman and CEO William A. Anders said: "For well over a year, I have spoken out on the need for rationalization and consolidation within the country's defense industry as the nation adjusts to the post-Cold War era. Consistent with this position, at General Dynamics we are focusing on developing the proper balance of sustainable business volumes, work force skills, plant capacity and capital necessary to create the programmatic efficiency in each of our core businesses that will be essential in this new era. Currently, each of these four businesses represents a strong franchise and each would be a Fortune 500 company on a stand-alone basis. Each business must build on its strengths to insure that it emerges from this period of rationalization as a clear leader in its marketplace. Consequently, our President Jim Mellor and I have charged these four executive officers, and the management teams who report to them, with developing and implementing strategies to assure long-term market leadership and true programmatic efficiency. This will permit our core businesses to continue to serve this nation's evolving defense needs with high quality, cost competitive products."
"As we move forward in this program, each core business will be assuming increased accountability for its capital structure; business strategy; customer, legislative and employee relations; product and program development activities; and its business alliances," Anders said. "Accordingly, we will continue to streamline our corporate staff as it adjusts to its principal role of providing general strategic guidance and oversight."
