GENERAL DYNAMICS EMPLOYEES RESPOND TO COMMUNITY NEED FOR BLOOD
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- General Dynamics Land Systems Division employees donated 133 pints of blood (77 on Nov. 25 and 56 on Nov. 26) in response to the tragic shooting at the Royal Oak post office on Nov. 14.
"General Dynamics employees certainly responded to our need," said Bernie Paraventi, American Red Cross unit supervisor. "Their quick response on such short notice was fantastic."
Some General Dynamics employees donated blood at the Roseville office and two mobile sites on the day of the shooting, but the Red Cross was still far short of the amount of blood needed to maintain an adequate reserve, so General Dynamics officials arranged for the Red Cross to hold a special blood drive on-site at the company's headquarters in Sterling Heights.
"We know the American Red Cross has a difficult time maintaining its three-day reserve of blood during holidays, and we thought the Royal Oak tragedy might make it even more difficult this year," said Patrick J. Sullivan, Land Systems Division vice president - human resources and administration. "Our employees are quick to help when they know the community has a need, and giving blood is one of the most meaningful ways we can contribute to the community at a time like this, so we encouraged them to donate blood on company time as part of our community relations effort," he said.
The Land Systems headquarters complex holds regular blood drives each year in January and July.
