GENERAL DYNAMICS DELAYS LAUNCH OF ATLAS II AND EUTELSAT II

GENERAL DYNAMICS DELAYS LAUNCH OF ATLAS II AND EUTELSAT II
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The launch of a General Dynamics commercial Atlas II launch vehicle and its EUTELSAT II communications satellite scheduled for launch Nov. 14 has been delayed.
The newest member of the Atlas family of launch vehicles was scheduled to launch the EUTELSAT spacecraft next week from Launch Complex 36B, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.
During recent factory tests, data indicated that transistors in the inertial navigation unit (INU) located on the Centaur upper stage did not meet General Dynamics stringent specifications or requirements for flight. The INU is used to maintain vehicle stability and navigate the launch vehicle to its final injection orbit.
"While we are disappointed at this flight delay, we feel our actions are prudent and necessary to reassure our customers of our commitment to provide the highest quality launch vehicle to meet reliable launch objectives," said Michael W. Wynne, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics Space Systems Division. "The Atlas II is a new launch vehicle and in our view this delay will give us the opportunity to correct this deficiency on the ground and launch with the highest probability of success," he said.
The decision to delay launch of EUTELSAT also impacts the launch of the first Air Force Atlas II and the Defense Systems Communications Satellite (DSCS). No new launch dates have been established for EUTELSAT and DSCS.
