GENERAL COMPUTER CORPORATION PURCHASES BELL ATLANTIC'S TRANSACTION SWITCHING AND TRANSPORT SERVICE

ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- General Computer Corporation of Twinsburg, Ohio, recently selected Bell Atlantic Transaction Switching and Transport Services from Bell of Pennsylvania, a Bell Atlantic company, to transmit various state Medicaid claims and verify eligibility. General Computer processes claims for insurance and state benefit programs from pharmacies, as well as doctor's offices and hospitals, throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and most other states.
Transaction Switching and Transport Services consist of two services provided by the Bell Atlantic telephone companies -- Bell Atlantic IntelliLinQ ISDN (integrated services digital network) service and 950 dialing service. When used in conjunction with local and long distance data networks, these services offer efficient, cost effective ways to automate claims processing and membership verification.
Today, many pharmacies or doctor's offices must make a telephone call to verify eligibility or to process a medical claim. Using either a private line or the dial-up public network, the process can take 30 seconds or more. Pharmacies or doctor's offices that use the Bell Atlantic telephone companies' transaction switching and transport services will be able to significantly reduce transaction time and telecommunications charges. The total authorization process can usually be reduced to less than 8 seconds with ISDN and 15 seconds using the 950 dialing option.
The Bell Atlantic ISDN and 950 dialing services both can connect directly to Bell Atlantic's Public Data Network (PDN) service, a local packet switched data service designed for applications such as claims processing and membership verification. With either service, scattered locations in a given local area can each use a single number for reaching the PDN service and aggregate their traffic on the data network to gain economies of scale.
General Computer Corporation is projecting that over 25 million pharmacy transactions annually in the state of Pennsylvania will be handled over Bell of Pennsylvania's Public Data Network (PDN) and that response times on claims will be reduced by up to 85 percent by using Bell Atlantic IntelliLinQ ISDN service or 950 dialing service.
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), based in Philadelphia, is the parent company of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware) and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Bell Atlantic is also the parent of one of the nation's largest cellular carriers and of companies that provide business systems services for customer-based information technology, including software, systems integration, hardware and software service and support, and financial services throughout the United States and internationally.
In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world and, in conjunction with Ameritech, owns a majority interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
General Computer Corporation is a leading provider of electronic systems and services for pharmacies, physicians and the healthcare industry.
